Movie Review: Jason X

JASON X
Evil gets an upgrade

Wikipedia says: Friday the 13th is the highest grossing horror franchise in the United States, with approximately $614 million. The Hannibal Lecter film series follows closely with $573 million, A Nightmare on Elm Street with $522 million, Halloween with $517 million, Scream with $400 million, Saw with $378 million, Psycho with $371 million, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with $315 million, and the Child's Play film series rounding out the list with approximately $200 million. The financial success has extended to home release, with more than five million DVDs sold by 2005.

The tenth movie in this ever successful franchise!

There already is a 2009 reboot of the franchise that I have yet to hunt down.

This is better than you would hope.

At first imagining the "hero" of countless Friday the 13th movies in space seems ridiculous.

But there is a nice back story to cover this excuse for mayhem and murder in outer space.

So Jason is frozen with cryogenics since he doesn't die by electric chair or lethal injection or hanging or firing squad, etc. Then in the future when Earth is doomed - a team of teenage students land on Earth as routine educational "bus trip" and find a dead woman beside the ice chamber of Jason at the now decrepit Crystal Lake facility.

Back on the ship their teacher revives the woman who had also frozen, who recounts her death by Jason - who is now missing from his autopsy table. LOL.

And the deaths in space begin.

But don't worry - within a minute of the movie starting, Jason is already hacking away at army generals and scientists in 2010.

I don't know which SciFi to compare it to - except maybe Alien - but that had the sexy Sigourney Weaver battling it out alone for most of the movie.

These idiotic students from year 2455 have now done the same mistake - brought the killer on board the ship.

Jason X is definitely a good SciFi with its technology display and humour.

Plus, there is a hot lovable cute female android who goes one-on-one with Jason.

The entire movie is gripping, especially the last half will have you glued to your seat and you won't know whom to root for actually. Well the human characters, even though played by unknown actors - are good actors, and in the small time have a decent enough characterisation to make you sympathise with them.

Of course, like all slasher films, this too has the space-borne students getting horny at every opportunity in scenes in which sometimes they end up getting f***ed (killed) by Jason.

There is intrigue, action, horror/ gore, backstabbing (not just by Jason), SciFi, humour, even a bit of love and humanity, great fireworks and special effects.

Fun movie for FRIDAY THE 13th that went by 2 days ago. Won't give you nightmares because its just a slasher movie and not really a mindbender like a few of the Hellraiser or Hannibal series or some of the other cool horror flicks.

On a scale of one to five, I would give it a 3 and yet say you will enjoy it. The 3 because I am not a fan of the slasher genre, whereas the Hannibal type of horror is more comprehensively entertaining.
