Movie Review: The Descendants

* * * * * / 5

Saw this on Thursday evening. My friend had to drag me to it. Basically, it can be safely assumed that if a movie is getting too many award nominations and especially up for an Oscar win - the movie is boring shite artsy crap. I want entertainment for the price of the ticket which is a ridiculous Rs 300/-.

So anyway, I went with an open mind and I like George Clooney. In this movie he shines. His age is no factor - he is perfect in this role - even though in real life he never wants to marry and never wants to make little Clooneys.

The movie beginning, middle and end - all are engaging. The first half is as involving as the second half.

My favourite scene was when Clooney tells his elder daughter about her mother's condition. That scene is imprinted in my head. The girl is in the pool and Clooney is trying to talk to this teenage girl who is clearly rebellious and has no respect for most elders. She is brilliant in that scene and this movie. Wish I knew those child actors names - they are the ones to keep an eye on - trust me they will be big - they are BIG. They will grow up to be shining Superstars of Hollywood.

Yes, both the child actors in this movie - Clooney's two daughters are brilliant actors.

There are various other emotionally engaging scenes and vivid cinematography. I loved the camerawork - the director and his cameraman surely deserve some recognition in the upcoming Oscars.

The script is average when it comes to dialogue but very real - very realistic. The other kid actor playing Clooney's elder daughter's boyfriend is also a good actor and provides great comic relief in this emotionally draining story of a family falling apart and the father trying to pull it together. He has great comic timing. Hope to see him in some college caper or road movie in future. Cool kid and philosophical too.

To admit it - yes I loved the movie. It is beautiful and shows a new side of Hawaii - makes it all REAL! You would enjoy it. It is indeed a mainstream movie. Not some artsy crap. It is a good storyline, interesting turns and a nice tight plot. The ending is open to interpretation. I thought all the lead actors and supporting cast did a great job.

A good movie to catch.
